US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is planning a trip to China next week as the Biden administration tries to mend relations that frayed in February after a Chinese balloon was shot down over US airspace.
US officials say Blinken is expected to be in Beijing on June 18 for meetings with top Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Qin Gang and possibly President Xi Jinping, according to the Associated Press.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the State Department nor the Chinese Foreign Ministry have yet confirmed the trip.
Blinken's visit was originally planned for February but was postponed after the spy balloon incident, which Beijing insists was a weather balloon, went off course.
Tensions between the two superpowers have recently fluctuated and at times were a step away from conflict, following disputes over Taiwan's independence.
