Two members of the campaign of conservative Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella were killed on Friday evening in the southeast of the country, just two weeks before the presidential election, his Defensores de la Patria party said.

Roger Mauricio Devia and Fabian Cardona were shot dead by gunmen in the town of Cubaral. According to the statement, four gunmen on motorcycles blocked the victims' path and opened fire on them.

Devia, a former mayor of Cubaral, coordinated Abelardo de la Espriella's campaign in the area, with the help of Cardona. The two victims were returning by motorcycle from the city of Villavicencio when the attack occurred.

"They were brutally murdered," Abelardo de la Espriella said in a video message. Authorities have launched investigations to identify the perpetrators, but have not yet said whether suspicions are focused on any specific organization.

However, the presidential candidate accused a dissident group of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), without presenting evidence for his claims.

According to polls, Abelardo de la Espriella is ranked second ahead of the first round of the presidential election on May 31, behind leftist candidate Ivan Cepeda. He has promised a tough approach to guerrilla groups, criminal gangs and drug trafficking. Recently, he said he had uncovered a plot to assassinate him, involving members of the country's secret services.

Colombians will vote in two weeks to choose a successor to President Gustavo Petro. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote in the first round, the new president will be elected in a runoff on June 21.
