More details are emerging from the serious incident that shook Modena, where a 31-year-old man hit pedestrians in the city center with a car and then injured a person who tried to stop him.
According to Italian media, the perpetrator has no links to terrorist organizations. He has been identified as Salim El Koudri, an Italian citizen of Moroccan origin, who graduated in Economics in Italy.
Preliminary investigations show that the 31-year-old had previously undergone treatment for psychological problems and, according to Italian public broadcaster RAI, had recently shown signs of mental illness. Authorities also said he had no criminal record.
Italian prosecutors are investigating the motives that led El Koudri to drive into pedestrians on one of Modena's main streets, injuring nine people. After the collision, he got out of the vehicle and also injured a passerby who tried to neutralize him.
The incident caused panic in the city center, while the perpetrator was detained by citizens until the police arrived.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella reacted after the incident and asked the mayor of Modena to thank the citizens who bravely intervened to stop the perpetrator before the intervention of law enforcement.
