The Palestinian president had a telephone conversation with Trump, congratulated

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke on the phone with President-elect Donald Trump and congratulated him on his victory.

The official Palestinian news agency reports that during the call, Abbas also told Trump that he looked forward to working with him to achieve a "just and comprehensive" peace in the region.

During Trump's first presidential term, he cut off US funding to the UN's Palestinian aid agency (UNRWA) and moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The move ended decades of US policy that the status of Jerusalem should be decided in negotiations with Palestine.

At the time, Abbas "warned of the dangerous consequences of such a decision on the peace process" and political factions led by Abbas' Fatah movement called for daily protest marches.

However, with his re-election, Palestinians are hoping for a change in Trump's policies and his approach to the Middle East.
