Olaf Scholz signaled today that he is ready to start talks about the date of early elections in Germany.
Scholz fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP) on Wednesday, destroying the coalition government of the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals.
"I emphasized on Wednesday that I want to enable new elections in Germany as soon as possible. And we should talk about the date in peace", said the chancellor, Olaf Scholz (Social Democratic Party of Germany SPD) on the sidelines of the informal meeting of the European Union leaders' summit in Budapest.
He said that it would be good for the other groups in the Bundestag to discuss which laws could still be passed before the elections and which would be the most suitable time for a vote of confidence in his government.
According to DW, the German chancellor then announced that with the help of other parties in the Bundestag, he would like to pass several important laws by the end of the year and that he would then ask for a vote of confidence in mid-January. This means that elections can be held until the end of March next year.
The opposition has expressed dissatisfaction with this plan and demands that the 66-year-old initiate the vote of confidence as soon as possible, preferably next week, so that new elections can be held as soon as possible.
According to current opinion polls by public broadcaster ZDF, 84 percent of German citizens want Bundestag elections to be held as soon as possible.
According to polls by the Forsa Institute, 57 percent of citizens also want the Social Democratic candidate in the early elections not to be the current Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, but the current Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius.
