Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Europe is not making any efforts to restore relations with the Kremlin.
Peskov said that neither German Chancellor Friedrich Merz nor French President Emmanuel Macron have made any attempts to establish direct contact or call Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Neither Merz nor Macron are making any attempts to call Putin. There is not much need to try here. If you want and if necessary, you can pick up and call President Putin, he has never refused direct contacts," Peskov said during a press briefing.
He stressed that Vladimir Putin prefers direct communication with European leaders, especially given the current deep disagreements between Russia and Europe. According to Peskov, problems can only be resolved through open and frank dialogue, while the Kremlin claims that the door to talks remains open from the Russian side.
The statement comes in a context where Russia-Europe tensions remain high, but there have been previous signals from Paris and Berlin about the possibility of renewing dialogue. However, according to Peskov, there have been no concrete initiatives from Merz or Macron for direct presidential communication so far.
He recalled that Putin has always been ready for such contacts, never refusing possible invitations. This comment from the Kremlin seems like an open call for European leaders to take the initiative, at a time when possible talks on Ukraine and European security are being discussed at various levels.
