TikTok and the US refute the thesis of Russian interference in the Romanian
Calin Georgescu

In November 2024, Romania faced one of the most unexpected political shocks in Europe. The independent candidate with nationalist and Eurosceptic leanings, Călin Georgescu, accused of pro-Russian stances, received over 22% in the first round of the presidential election, advancing to a runoff against the pro-European Elena Lasconi and leaving behind important figures such as former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.

Two days before the second round, in December 2024, the Constitutional Court annulled the entire electoral process, relying on declassified documents that spoke of possible Russian interference through cyberattacks and the mobilization of around 25,000 TikTok accounts in favor of Georgescut. The “Russian interference” narrative was widely disseminated in Western media and was embraced by the EU, which also opened an investigation into TikTok.

However, as the months passed, doubts about the evidence emerged. TikTok itself stated that it had found no evidence of manipulation linked to Moscow, while a recent report by the US Congressional Judiciary Committee stressed that there was no evidence of Russian interference, calling into question the initial rationale for the cancellation.

Meanwhile, Georgescu faced new investigations, not for Russian interference, but for charges related to propaganda with extremist references. The trial dragged on due to disagreements between judges and only began after the intervention of a third panel of judges. In March 2025, the Court again rejected his candidacy, relying on the previous reasoning.

That same month, authorities banned another nationalist figure, Diana Șoșoacă, from running, on the grounds that her statements conflicted with democratic values. The decision sparked debate about the limits of political pluralism in the country.

Following TikTok's stance and the US Congressional report, the Georgescu case is presented differently from the initial narrative. Allegations of Russian interference remain unproven, while legal developments and the exclusion of opposition candidates significantly influenced the political race, favoring figures acceptable to the Euro-Atlantic camp.
