The President of Georgia pro-European message at the opposition rally

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili addressed a crowd of thousands at a rally in the capital on Sunday, delivering a strong pro-European Union message just days before parliamentary elections that will determine the country's European future.

The crowds gathered in Tbilisi's central square represent "a free Georgia," she said.

"Here today is society, people, Georgians who are going to Europe," said Ms. Zourabichvili, who has urged Georgians to vote against the ruling Georgian Dream party.

The October 26 election is widely seen as a test for Georgia, whether the country will return to Russia's orbit or maintain its pro-Western orientation.

Last year the EU granted Georgia candidate country status, a first step towards eventual membership. But relations have soured significantly since the 'Georgian Dream' passed a law on "foreign agents" in May, which critics say is a sign the country is turning back to Russia.

Thousands of Georgians gathered in Freedom Square on Sunday to support the four main pro-Western opposition groups competing next weekend.

President Zourabichvili, who has largely ceremonial powers, was elected in 2018 with the support of the 'Georgian Dream' but has since become one of her staunchest critics.
