Serbian authorities have arrested two people suspected of plotting to attack President Aleksandar Vučić and his family, the Serbian Interior Ministry announced.
The ministry claims that they had been planning since December 2025 to “forcibly change the constitutional order of the Republic of Serbia.” Authorities say the plan included securing weapons and organizing an attack on the president, his wife and children, as well as violent actions against police officers.
The suspects have been detained for 48 hours on the basis of a criminal complaint and are expected to appear before the prosecution.
The arrests come in a tense political climate, following protests that began in November 2024, when the collapse of a concrete shelter at the renovated railway station in Novi Sad caused the deaths of 16 people.
Protesters accuse the government of corruption and lack of accountability and demand early elections. President Vučić has stated that the protests are supported by foreign actors aiming to destabilize the country. He has also cited allegations of interference by the intelligence services of Albania and Kosovo.
The government has published investigative documents regarding the Novi Sad incident, promised increased funding for universities, and several ministers have resigned. President Vučić has announced early elections, without setting a date yet.
