An accusation by Russia that Britain and France want to equip Ukraine with a nuclear bomb has reignited nuclear rhetoric and threats in Europe.
Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, said that the United Kingdom and France were planning to supply Kiev with nuclear weapons. Citing intelligence but without providing evidence, the SVR stressed that the British and French elites were not prepared to accept defeat in the war. Under these circumstances, according to the SVR, France and Britain were seeking to deliver nuclear bombs, or a "bomb" equipped with a nuclear warhead, to Kiev in order to secure more favorable peace terms. Russia's foreign intelligence service also said that Germany refused to support the effort, while the United Kingdom and France were still working to achieve the goal.
-Moscow's reaction
The accusation by the Russian intelligence service has prompted a sharp reaction from Moscow. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said the suspected plans were extremely dangerous and a clear violation of all norms of international law. He added that this would be taken into account in the ongoing peace negotiations with the US and Ukraine.
" You have already heard our Parliament urging colleagues in England and France to launch parliamentary investigations. This is a flagrant violation of all relevant standards, principles and provisions of international law ," Peskov said in his statement.
Then there was former President Dmitry Medvedev who openly threatened that if this act were true, then Russia could use nuclear weapons against the United Kingdom, Ukraine and France.
" There is no doubt that, in this case, Russia will have to use any nuclear weapons, including non-strategic ones, against targets in Ukraine that pose a threat to our country, and, if necessary, against supplier countries, which will become accomplices in a nuclear conflict with Russia ," said Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Medvedev.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a speech to a board of the Federal Security Service (FSB), stated that opponents should carefully consider a nuclear war with Russia, as they would regret it.
" They don't know what to do to destroy this peace process, to stop attempts to resolve it by diplomatic means. Everything is being done to carry out some kind of provocation and undermine everything that has been achieved on this negotiating path so carefully. The opponents really want to defeat Russia, they are looking for any method to do this, they will bring themselves to an extreme line and later regret it ," Putin said.
-Britain, France and Ukraine deny the allegations
The UK government has dismissed Russian claims that it was planning to supply Ukraine with a nuclear weapon. The British prime minister's spokesman said it was an attempt by Putin to divert attention from his atrocities in Ukraine.
"This is a clear attempt by Vladimir Putin to divert attention from his abhorrent actions in Ukraine. There is no truth to this. You will have seen the Prime Minister's words this morning paying tribute to the extraordinary resilience of the Ukrainian people... We will continue our efforts to secure a just and lasting peace," the British Government's response said.
Moscow's claims have also been rejected by Ukraine, which has called Russia's accusations that France and Britain were working to supply it with a nuclear bomb absurd. According to Kiev, these are nothing more than fabricated lies.
“Russian officials, known for their impressive history of lies, are again trying to fabricate the old nonsense of the ‘dirty bomb.’ For clarification: Ukraine has already denied such absurd Russian claims many times before, and we officially deny them again now. We call on the international community to reject and condemn Russia’s dirty information bombs ,” said Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesman for the Ukrainian foreign ministry.
French Response, an account on 'X' associated with the French Foreign Ministry and created to combat disinformation, rejected Moscow's claim.
"Five years after the start of its 'three-day war,' Russia would prefer you focus on French and British nuclear weapons. Nuclear athleticism will not hide the overwhelming international support for Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of your failed 'three-day war,'" the response read.
On the fourth anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has reignited the nuclear war debate, reminding everyone how far and near a nuclear war is in such cases./ Pamphlet
