Russia announced that 10 bodies have been recovered and the black boxes of the plane that crashed near Moscow a few days ago, on which the head of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin is said to have been on board, have been found.
Investigators said molecular genetic tests are now being conducted. The plane went down on Wednesday near the Russian capital, an episode that immediately prompted speculation that the crash may have been caused by a bomb or a missile.
The spokesman of Russian President Vladimir Putin stated earlier that the Kremlin has no hand in this event, and that the claims that he gave the order to kill Prigozhin was a big lie. The one-time Putin loyalist led an armed revolt of his mercenary fighters in June, but did not see his rebellion through.
Putin at the time described the uprising as "treason", but agreed to a deal under which Wagner's mercenaries would either join Russia's regular army or go to Belarus.
A preliminary US intelligence assessment concluded that a deliberate explosion caused the plane to crash. One of the US officials said that preliminary assessments show that Yevgeny Prigozhin was "very likely" targeted and that the explosion fits with "Putin's long history of silencing his critics".
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment, did not provide any details on what caused the blast, which is believed to mark some form of revenge for Wagner's rebellion, which was seen as a challenge to large to the 23-year rule of the Russian leader. Russian media initially cited anonymous sources within the Wagner Group as saying that Prigozhin was dead. But so far there is no official confirmation.
