World Food Program raises alarm: Closing Hormuz risks leaving 45 million people

The World Food Program (WFP) Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, Samer AbdelJaber, has stated that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is escalating food insecurity and malnutrition in countries that are already facing such difficulties.

He described the situation as a “crisis within a crisis,” noting that markets are destabilizing and prices are rising. According to him, these developments will continue to produce ripple effects globally.

"It's becoming like a crisis within a crisis. Markets are getting bloated, prices are getting hit, and this will continue to send shockwaves across the globe ," he said.

AbdelJaber estimates that up to 45 million people could face food insecurity if the crisis continues.

His comments come after a coalition of countries released a report on Friday warning that levels of food insecurity and malnutrition remain extremely high. The report by the Global Network Against Food Crises found that the crises are concentrated in ten countries.

According to the report, the most affected countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Sudan, Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen.
