Proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, Zelensky: We are waiting for Russia's

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kiev was waiting for Russia's response to a 30-day ceasefire proposal agreed with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland. The proposal, which calls for an unconditional cessation of air, sea and ground fighting, is expected to begin on May 12 as a step towards reducing tensions in the ongoing conflict.

At a press conference, Zelensky stressed that the ceasefire is an opportunity to save lives and pave the way for peace talks.

"We share a common position: an immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire lasting at least 30 days is needed ," he said, adding that Ukraine is ready to act immediately if Russia agrees.

He warned that, in the event of Moscow's refusal, the European Union, Britain, the US and Norway are preparing a new package of tough sanctions, particularly against Russia's energy and banking sectors.

"If Russia chooses to continue its aggression, it will face serious consequences ," Zelensky added.

On the other hand, the Kremlin has previously rejected a similar proposal, calling it impossible without resolving several preliminary issues, while proposing a short three-day ceasefire for Victory Day celebrations on May 8-10, which Zelensky dismissed as "theatricalism."

Ceasefire talks have intensified after US President Donald Trump pledged to broker a quick resolution to the conflict. However, Russia has expressed reservations, calling for broader negotiations that include bilateral relations with the US.

Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's readiness for peace, but stressed that any agreement must guarantee the country's security and sovereignty.

" The ball is in Russia's court. The world is waiting to see if they really want peace ," he concluded.
