The government is under pressure to strike hard and fast to demand a high price that will deter Iran from launching such missiles against Israel.
When the first photos of downed Iranian missiles were released on Sunday morning, they didn't look real.
Even seasoned military spokesman Peter Lerner was duped.
"I thought it was fake news ," he told Sky News.
The rockets that fell on the Dead Sea and other cities of Israel seemed too colossal to be true.
At a military base near the coast, we were shown the fuel tank for an Emad or 'Pillar of Strength' missile that entered Israeli airspace that night.
It is 11 meters long, but with a head the size of a vehicle. It has a range of 1,000 miles, a payload of half a ton of explosives.
Iran fired dozens of such missiles at Israel on Saturday. Claims that Iran's attack was in any way a symbolic effort seemed absurd.
If any of those ballistic missiles had reached a populated Israeli center, it would have been devastating.
Speaking to reporters, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said that the attack will not go unpunished.
"Firing 110 ballistic missiles directly at Israel will not stop there. We will respond. In our time. In our country. We will choose the way," he said.
It is said that there is an intense debate in the government about how this will happen. The government is under pressure to strike hard and fast to demand a high price that will deter Iran from launching such missiles against Israel.
But others fear it could jeopardize the coalition of allies and neighbors that helped defend Israel that night.
David Horovitz is the editor of the Times of Israel and one of its most experienced observers of the country's international relations.
"There is a concern that if you retaliate, you risk destroying that coalition, you could provoke a further Iranian response and therefore a regional war, even potentially a world war ," he told Sky News.
One possibility for the coalition is said to come in order to create real international pressure on Iran, not to stop its alleged nuclear weapons program.
But there is also a large amount. Some reports say Israel's retaliation will stop at an all-out attack on targets inside Iran. The next few hours could decide whether or not the war in the Middle East will expand./ Adapted from: " Pamphlet", From: " Sky News ".
