Lack of concrete progress and uncertainties in Iranian leadership block a new round of negotiations

US President Donald Trump's sudden decision to cancel his delegation's trip to Pakistan, just a day after it was announced, signals that the conditions set by the US for the resumption of negotiations with Iran have not been met.

According to US officials, Washington had demanded two key elements from Tehran in the 14 days after the last round of negotiations ended without an agreement: a proposal that addresses Trump's "red lines" on the nuclear program and greater clarity on the decision-making structure in Iran.

A day earlier, there seemed to be signs of movement. “ We have seen some progress on the Iranian side in recent days ,” White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said.

However, this progress proved insufficient. Trump decided to cancel the trip about an hour after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Islamabad, where he had briefed Pakistani officials on Iran's latest proposal.

Trump himself suggested that the decision was also related to a practical assessment of the situation. He weighed the long duration of the trip, about 18 hours, against the low chance of real progress in the negotiations.

American officials remain concerned that divisions between moderate and hardline wings within the Iranian regime are preventing the achievement of a unified negotiating position.

" There is great infighting and confusion within their 'leadership.' No one knows who is in charge, including themselves ," Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.

In these conditions, the US and Iran remain without a deal and without clear signals of progress towards it. Trump insists that the responsibility falls on Iran. “ We have all the cards, they have none ,” he declared.

However, despite this stance, it remains unclear how the conflict could end and how the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened without an agreement between the parties.
