Russian President Vladimir Putin has informed the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, that he will not participate in the G20 summit.
India hosts this year's summit, which will be held in Delhi on September 9 and 10. Putin told the Indian Prime Minister that instead of him, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to Delhi.
During the phone call, the two leaders discussed several regional and global concerns, which will also be discussed at the G20 summit.
According to the Kremlin's confirmation, although earlier it was expected that Putin would travel to India, the visit there is impossible due to the Russian president's busy schedule.
The G20 includes the 19 richest countries in the world, plus the European Union. This year, the presidency of the G20 is held by India, which year after year goes to one of its member countries. The main topic of discussion this year is expected to be the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with American President Joe Biden or British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who will be present in Delhi.
A few weeks ago, Putin also canceled his participation in the South African summit.
Vladimir Putin was the only leader of a country in the bloc who will not be in person at the event in Johannesburg.
Last month, South African authorities said Putin would not attend the summit "by mutual agreement" as he risked arrest due to an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court.
