The circumstances surrounding the crash of Yevgeny Prigozhin's private plane in a field northwest of Moscow remain shrouded in mystery. The Russian military leaders he sought to displace through his armed rebellion remain firmly in control, and his mercenary force is now under new leadership.
President Vladimir Putin, although he experienced a brief challenge to his authority during the short-lived rebellion led by Prigozhin, is appearing more formidable than ever. Prigozhin's dramatic death sends a chilling message to anyone considering a challenge to Putin's rule.
The Kremlin's strategy to keep Prigozhin's death low-key is illustrated by Putin's absence from his funeral and the tight control exercised by troops to limit media access to the Porokhovskoye cemetery in St. Petersburg, where he was buried on August 29.
