Putin paranoid, his advisors call for caution against Trump: US could trap us

The Russians' fear is that they could fall into a trap.

In recent days, Sergei Lavrov, one of the most well-known Russian politicians, not only because of the office he holds, has addressed the media with a popular proverb saying; "good things come slowly, slowly."

In an interview published yesterday on the Foreign Ministry website, Lavrov reiterated the concept, while certainly defining Washington's recent behavior as "encouraging."

" It is too early to draw conclusions, we have not even begun to overcome the accumulated problems in relations with the Americans ," he said.

A few hours later, another official voice in power spoke in the same vein. At his regular press conference, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the path to restoring normal relations between Russia and the US was still "at the initial stage," adding that although Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have expressed a clear political will in this direction, the path remains quite long and difficult.

On the eve of the Ukrainian-American talks in Saudi Arabia, analysts and the Russian press of all stripes are making assumptions about these messages that are somewhere between a carrot and a stick, between exaltation and a cold shower.

The double statement of Lavrov and Peskov is certainly not a coincidence, as nothing is in the Kremlin's communication. For Moscow, peace is not far, but not close either, to paraphrase the words quoted above. At the moment, a general feeling of distrust prevails.

The Russians' fear is that they could fall into an alleged trap set by Volodymyr Zelensky, who in a matter of days transformed from someone mocked by Trump into a Machiavelli capable of managing an insidious plan also devised and suggested by French and British advisors.

Mikhail Rostovsky, a political observer for the daily newspaper Moskovskij Komsomolets, speaks openly about a trap that Russia should not fall into under any circumstances. According to him, Kiev will propose as a first step a cessation of attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure with missiles, drones and bombs and a so-called "water ceasefire", that is, the absence of military operations in the Black Sea.

"A naive attempt to once again present Putin and Trump as two scoundrels: Russia is offered to give up attacks, saying that it will repel in the strongest areas and opponents. The continuation of the war remains with Russia. The truth is that Kiev is not ready for conscious and concrete negotiations for peace," Rostovsky says.

The thesis of Ukraine's unwillingness to end the conflict is also being pushed by mainstream media analysts, who explain that the clash between Trump and Zelensky in the White House was specifically designed by the US administration to create conditions that would allow Russia to reoccupy the territories in Kursk.

Since Zelensky refused to return them, the US needed a pretext for Moscow to quickly regain them. According to these ingenious theories, the advance of Russian units in the region could indicate the presence of a secret agreement between the US and Russia for a quick peace, opposed by common enemies. A US-Russia axis in favor of a difficult peace compared to the warmongers of Zelensky and Europe. The narrative remains as such and seems well-structured.

As for issuing the usual warnings to Moscow's main opponents, there is a turn. Yesterday it was the turn of the General and State Duma deputy, Andrey Gurulev, who thundered against the declared plan for European rearmament hypothesized by Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen.

“It is essential to make former Western partners understand the risks they face: guys, if you don’t calm down, we will go on the offensive,” he said./ Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “ Corriere Della Sera
