Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia is facing unprecedented pressure from Western countries, but stressed that these efforts have failed to cause it a strategic defeat or destabilize the country's political system.
Speaking at the plenary session of the ruling United Russia party congress, Putin said that Western elites have increased pressure on Moscow without achieving their objectives.
"They cannot inflict a strategic defeat on us and cannot win on the battlefield. That is why they are trying to destabilize the political situation and incite internal unrest. But this attempt has also failed," the Russian president said.
Putin added that Russian authorities will take all measures to protect the upcoming elections from any attempts at interference or manipulation from abroad.
In his speech, he also referred to the developments of the last 25 years, describing the strengthening of the unity of Russian society as the most important achievement of this period.
"Over the last 25 years, many important and historic events have occurred. However, the most important thing is that the unity of our people has been strengthened, as has the will to develop and strengthen the country," he declared.
At the end of his speech, Putin reiterated that power and independence are, in his opinion, essential for Russia's future.
"I will repeat: Russia can only be a strong and independent power. Otherwise, there will be no Russia at all," the Russian president said.
