Russian forces are facing difficulties in Donbas, while Ukrainian drones have exposed the Kremlin's weaknesses...
The Kremlin's annual May 9 military parade, marking victory in World War II, will not include tanks, artillery or missile systems this year, as Russian forces struggle to break through defensive fortifications in eastern Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced late Tuesday that, "due to the current operational situation," students of the Suvorov and Nakhimov military schools, cadet corps, and the military equipment column will not participate in the parade.
According to Politico, regular Ukrainian drone attacks on key targets inside Russia have exposed vulnerabilities deep inside Russian territory. Moscow has also struggled to replace human losses during the bloody war in Donbas.
On May 9, Russia marks the Soviet victory over Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany. The date has become a central symbol of modern Russian militaristic ideology and is used by the Kremlin as part of the justification for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, under the pretext of fighting Nazism.
Traditionally, parades in Moscow have included columns of troops, dozens of tanks, artillery systems, air defenses, nuclear-capable weapons and other military equipment.
This year, the parade will include veterans of Russia's war against Ukraine, several military students, marines and a military aviation display.
Independent information from the front remains limited. The Ukrainian armed forces regularly publish estimates of Russian losses. According to Kiev, as of Wednesday, Russia had lost more than 1 million soldiers killed and wounded, over 11,000 tanks, 24,490 armored vehicles, 40,000 artillery systems, more than 1,300 anti-aircraft systems, 435 aircraft and 350 helicopters since 2022.
Politico was unable to verify these figures. Meanwhile, independent OSINT analysis by Oryx, a Netherlands-based research group that collects visually verified data on Ukrainian and Russian losses, has confirmed that as of April 1, Russia had lost over 24,487 pieces of various military equipment in Ukraine.
