"I wanted to go to court because I didn't feel like I was right. It's ridiculous. I didn't want to kill. If I had, I would have killed them!"
This is what the 89-year-old man identified as Panagiotis K., who opened fire at the EFKA (Social Security Fund) in Kerameikos and at the Court of Appeal in Athens yesterday, stated in his testimony to the police.
According to Protothema.gr, the man explained that he left home and arrived in Kolonos by taxi, which he had booked the day before. He had with him a suitcase containing his passport, ID card, etc.
“I had arranged to take a taxi to Patras after EFKA. But the taxi driver ran away. So I went and got another taxi to take me to Loukareos, the Court of Appeal. I was leaving from Loukareos, I knew where to go to avoid the checks. As soon as I got off, I got another taxi and told him to take me to the bus station. At first, I thought about going to Kalamata and not leaving at all. I thought about going to a cafe the next day and asking them to call the police. Then I asked the taxi driver how much he wanted to take me to Patras. I gave him 250 euros and he picked me up,” he described.
"I didn't want to kill anyone. I wanted to make a fuss because I didn't get what I deserved. It's absurd. If I wanted to, I would kill them," he added.
Furthermore, the 89-year-old noted that when he arrived in Patras, he thought about getting a ticket to Italy or France, in order to go to Strasbourg.
"What if I go to prison in Greece, what if I go to France. And in Strasbourg I would throw it in the air, not at anyone. Then I went to the hotel because I couldn't find a ticket for that day and then the police came," he concluded.
The 89-year-old was prosecuted for a number of criminal offenses by the Athens District Court Prosecutor's Office. Specifically, the 89-year-old is being prosecuted for attempted serial murder, a prominent case of illegal possession of weapons inside a courthouse, and a prominent case of illegal possession of a firearm.
The 84-year-old is also being prosecuted for being continuously armed with a weapon, illegal possession of ammunition and cartridges, illegal possession of weapons, knives, interruption of service in case of continuation, and threatening to commit crimes.
Following the 89-year-old's prosecution, his lawyer, Vasilis Noulezas, argued that his client "had no intent to kill, nor any intention to harm a human being, he was concerned about their health and even expressed remorse to me."
"He was outraged, it was an act of desperation, hopelessness and disappointment in a fight that lasted for many years and was about granting a pension, he had announced in advance that he would act like this. He told me that the security measures were rudimentary and the only thing he wanted was to shock them, scare them and mainly send them a message that EFKA, when it comes mainly to granting a pension, should treat a citizen like this with more respect who receives a pension from America and Germany and has been treated in an exemplary manner," added the elderly man's lawyer.
According to him, the 89-year-old accuses EFKA of forging his signature on the sickness and health booklets that disappeared him, which were sent through the American agency.
"He is calm and normal and has his senses intact. He was going to go to Strasbourg to protest because his case was not even tried there, it was basically rejected. And this filled him with despair and he committed this extreme act," the 89-year-old's lawyer concluded.
