German authorities say the suspect gathered information about military aid to Ukraine and identified potential sabotage targets.
German federal prosecutors have arrested a Kazakh national suspected of spying for a Russian intelligence service and identifying potential sabotage targets, authorities announced on Wednesday.
According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the suspect, identified as Sergej K., was detained on Tuesday in Berlin by officers of the Federal Criminal Police Office, based on an arrest warrant.
Prosecutors suspect that he had been in contact with a Russian intelligence chief since at least May 2025 and had passed on sensitive information from Germany.
According to authorities, the materials included data on Berlin's military support for Ukraine, as well as information on the German defense industry, particularly companies developing drones and robotics.
Authorities also accuse him of photographing public buildings in Berlin and documenting military convoys on German highways, including one linked to a NATO member country. He is also suspected of identifying potential targets for sabotage and offering to recruit others for espionage and sabotage operations.
The arrest comes at a time of heightened concern in Europe about Russian intelligence activities following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. German officials have repeatedly warned of increased espionage and hybrid threats.
During an oversight session in the Bundestag in 2025, intelligence chief Martin Jäger told lawmakers that “we are already under fire today” and that Moscow “will not hesitate to enter into direct military confrontation with NATO, if it deems it necessary.”
The suspect is expected to appear on Wednesday before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice, who will decide whether he will remain in custody.
