Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the West that he is ready to use nuclear weapons if Russian and Belarusian territory is affected.
The statement was made during a meeting with the Council for Nuclear Prevention, where the request for the revision of the nuclear doctrine was presented.
He made it clear that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, is considered a joint attack on the Russian Federation.
" Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons during an aggression, even if the enemy, using conventional weapons, creates a critical threat. The use of conventional weapons constitutes a serious threat to our sovereignty ," Putin underlined, reports "RIA Novosti".
Putin specified that the bases of the state policy on nuclear deterrence "were agreed with the president of Belarus", therefore Moscow reserves the right to use nuclear weapons "in case of aggression against Russia and Belarus".
According to him, Russia may consider the use of nuclear weapons after receiving reliable data on the mass launch of offensive air space weapons, including missiles and drones, and their crossing over the state border of the Russian Federation.
During the meeting with the Council, Putin proposed to discuss the issue of updating the foundations of state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence. " We will consider this possibility as soon as we have reliable information about the mass launch of attack weapons into the airspace and their crossing of our state border, cruise missiles, drones, hypersonic aircraft and other aircraft ," Putin said.
