Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked his generals to halt the Ukrainian counteroffensive by the end of October and instructed Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to improve the situation on the ground.
The news was reported in the international media citing an internal Kremlin source.
"Putin reportedly gave Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu a one-month deadline until the end of October 2023 to improve the situation on the front line, stop Ukrainian counteroffensives and make Russian forces regain the initiative to launched an offensive operation against a major city," the Institute for the Study of War said in a data update.
He said the Russian military command is likely to order relentless attacks in the hope of forcing the Ukrainian counteroffensive to peak, even at a high cost to Russian military capabilities.
Russia launched a so-called "special military operation" in Ukraine in February last year, putting its neighbor under a full occupation and causing thousands of deaths and displacing millions.
