After a few days of agony, Matteo Messina Denaro, the mafia boss of Cosa Nostra arrested in January after 30 years on the run, died in the L'Aquila hospital.
The 62-year-old mob boss was suffering from a severe form of colon cancer, which was diagnosed while he was still in remission in late 2020.
And because of him, the ROS carabinieri and the Palermo prosecutor's office tracked him down, who managed to escape justice for 30 years. After his capture, Messina Denaro underwent chemotherapy at L'Aquila super prison where a sort of infirmary was set up next to his cell.
A team of oncologists and nurses from the hospital of Abruzzo constantly followed the patient, who was in a very serious condition.
In the 9 months of detention, Castelvetrano's godfather underwent two surgical operations related to cancer complications.
He never recovered from the latter, so much so that doctors decided not to send him back to prison, but to treat him in a maximum security room at the hospital, treating him with pain therapy and then sedating him.
