The Kremlin said today that it is closely monitoring the situation in the north of Kosovo, but did not condemn the deadly attack by masked persons against the Kosovo Police in Zveçan the day before.
Russia does not recognize Kosovo's independence, as it is a traditional supporter of Serbia, with which it has close cultural and religious ties.
"The situation is very difficult. In Kosovo, we see a traditionally biased approach towards the Serbs... the situation is very, very tense and potentially dangerous, we are watching it closely," said the Kremlin spokesman,
A member of the Kosovo Police was killed and several others were injured in clashes with an armed group in the northern part of the country, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, on September 24.
The Kosovar authorities said that three attackers were killed, while six people, who were suspected of being in contact with them, were arrested. About 30 attackers were stationed in the monastery of the village of Banjské in the municipality of Zveçan and around it.
The Kosovo police took control of the monastery late Sunday and are now securing the village.
Earlier on Monday, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, met with the Ambassador of Russia in Belgrade, Aleksandar Bocan-Harchenko.
"I am grateful that (the Russian ambassador) listened to the prayers and requests of the Serbian side," Vučić wrote on his Instagram account on September 25.
He did not elaborate on what the demands are.
Kosovo has made Serbia responsible for the attack, while Belgrade officially the Kosovo Serbs./ REL
