Lavrov warns US: Sanctions are a pit that can swallow...
Vladimir Putin is determined to continue the war in Ukraine, despite stern warnings from Donald Trump about stronger sanctions and increased military aid for Kiev.
According to sources close to the Kremlin, the Russian president believes that Russia's economy is prepared to withstand any "heavy tariffs" that could be imposed by a new US administration.
" Putin is convinced that no one has really entered into peace negotiations, including the United States, so he will continue until he secures the objectives he has set ," a source told Reuters.
In the same vein, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow has no doubt about its ability to withstand any new package of sanctions from the West. During a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in China, Lavrov expressed skepticism about Trump’s latest statements, saying: “ We have been listening for 24 hours, for 50 days, for 100 days... we have already passed this stage. Now we want to see what Washington really wants .”
Lavrov also suggested that the US is under strong pressure from the European Union and NATO to pursue a more aggressive line towards Moscow: " The EU is preparing another channel of sanctions and intends to drag the US into this stream. But we have a saying: 'Don't dig a hole for someone else, or you might fall into it yourself .'"
Putin's stance reflects a cold-force strategy: as long as there are no real conditions for serious dialogue, he will continue the offensive in Ukraine. Donald Trump, on the other hand, has reinforced his tough discourse towards Moscow, threatening tough economic tariffs and increased military aid to Kiev if the conflict does not stop.
This means that the fall of 2025 is expected to be decisive: a test of the nerves and diplomatic strategies of the superpowers, with Ukraine, as always, in the middle of the clash. /Pamphlet
