Ukraine's Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, has resigned.
This comes a day after Volodymyr Zelenskyy nominated Shmyhal as Ukraine's new defense minister and said he was counting on parliament's support for the government reshuffle.
He proposed Yulia Svyrydenko, currently First Deputy Prime Minister, to head the new government as prime minister.
Shmyhal has held the post since March 2020, making him the longest-serving head of government since the country gained independence in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Who is Svyrydenko?
Svyrydenko, 39, is an economist by profession and has served as First Deputy Prime Minister since 2021.
She played a key role in the recent negotiations for a mineral agreement with the US.
