British government accuses Beijing of interfering in internal affairs, MI5

The UK government has issued a strong indictment of China, describing its activities on British soil as “covert, coordinated and calculated attempts” to influence London’s political sovereignty. The warning came after MI5 issued a new security alert related to attempts by Chinese intelligence to infiltrate state institutions.

British Security Minister Dan Jarvis spoke openly about an organized Chinese intelligence campaign that, according to him, uses front companies and external headhunters to contact people working in institutions with access to government information.

Jarvis warned that: "The target of Chinese operations is not just MPs, but anyone who moves around parliament or government premises."

China has a "very low threshold" for what it considers valuable information and uses small fragments of data to build a broader picture of the functioning of the British state.

In the most direct statement, he said: “This is a disguised and deliberate interference by a foreign power in our sovereign affairs. This government will not tolerate it.”

Jarvis stressed that Britain will take "all necessary measures" to protect its national interest, including coordinating with its key allies.

The minister confirmed that the British Foreign Secretary had communicated to her Chinese counterpart on November 6 that any activity that undermines the United Kingdom's national security and democracy "will be dealt with with zero tolerance."

However, Jarvis left open a door to cooperation with China "when interests coincide" - a typical stance of British diplomacy, which tries to maintain a balance between competition and engagement.
