Apple has updated its App Store rules regarding the use of artificial intelligence, requiring developers to obtain explicit consent from users before transferring personal data to third-party AI systems.
According to the company, developers must clearly specify when and where data will be shared, including when it is used by third-party artificial intelligence companies. All apps must obtain direct user consent before enabling such a feature.
The updated policy, part of the “App Review Guidelines,” is Apple’s first official guidance to directly address third-party AI. In the document, the company warns that apps will be rejected if their behavior “crosses the line,” adding that this assessment remains subjective: “I’ll know when I see it,” the guideline says.
The update marks a new approach to Apple's approach to artificial intelligence. Under CEO Tim Cook, the company has been cautious and often slow to adopt advanced AI features, previously preferring the term "machine learning" over "artificial intelligence."
