NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke with Poland's president on Friday about signs that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace on December 29, during a major missile and drone strike by Moscow in Ukraine.
Stoltenberg said he consulted President Andrzej Duda about the "missile incident" and wrote on the X social network that "NATO is monitoring the situation and will keep in touch until the facts are clarified."
Poland's Defense Forces said on Friday that an unidentified object entered Polish airspace from the direction of Ukraine and then disappeared from radar.
"Everything indicates that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace. We observed it on the radar and then it disappeared from the radar. This is confirmed by the radars and by our allies in NATO", said the Commander of the Armed Forces of Poland, General Wieslaw Kukula.
Poland's Defense Forces said the object entered 40 kilometers into Polish airspace and left after less than three minutes.
Kukula said steps are being taken to validate the findings and eliminate the possibility of a technical error.
Poland summoned Russia's envoy to Warsaw to a meeting and asked him for an explanation. Russia's RIA Novosti news agency quoted the Russian charge d'affaires in Warsaw as saying that Poland did not provide evidence of border violations.
U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke by phone with Poland's chief of national security, Jacek Siewiera, to express "the solidarity of the United States with Poland as it deals with reports of a missile launch." in Polish airspace temporarily," the White House said.
Sullivan pledged technical assistance and assured Siewieran that the US president, Joe Biden, is following this incident closely.
It is not clear where the object disappeared from the radar, or in what direction it was going. Polish troops were mobilized to find him.
Ukraine has described the Russian missile attack as the largest so far in the war of aggression that Moscow launched in February 2022.
The targets of the attacks were the capital Kiev, as well as large cities such as Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Lvini.
