Hundreds of people demonstrated on Friday in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, and blocked an important crossroads of the capital in protest of suspected election manipulation. Demonstrators have set up tents at the crossroads leading to the government block, where they spent the evening.
Today, a protest march is planned with the participation of well-known Serbian figures, artists and intellectuals. Most of the demonstrators are students, demanding the annulment of the official election results and new elections.
The party of the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, has clearly won the elections on December 17, according to official data. International observers have reported a number of irregularities in the voting. According to the largest opposition alliance, "Serbia Against Violence", among others, tens of thousands of residents from Republika Srpska have been bussed to vote illegally in Belgrade.
Voting is also being repeated today in 30 election centers. In the Friday evening protests at the crossroads of Belgrade, hundreds of other citizens who had previously gathered in front of the Central Electoral Commission took part in addition to the students, according to DPA.
In the past days there have been regular protests in Belgrade with roadblocks and other rallies. Last weekend, demonstrators threw stones at the Belgrade City Hall building and tried to destroy it. More than 30 demonstrators were stopped by the police.
