Borrell's report on Kosovo towards finalization, EU: It may also include

The spokesperson of the European Union, Peter Stano, said on Tuesday that the chief diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell, is finalizing the report about the steps taken by Kosovo to remove the punitive measures of the European bloc, and that the operations of the authorities will also be included there. of Kosovo for closing the facilities of the Savings Bank of the Post of Serbia, in the north of Kosovo.

On May 20, the authorities in Kosovo carried out a police operation against Serbian financial institutions in the north of Kosovo, which resulted in the closure of six facilities of the Postal Savings Bank and the People's Bank of Serbia in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by Serbian majority.

During the action, which the Kosovo authorities described as a measure to establish "order and legality", various pieces of evidence, including money, were confiscated.

EU member countries have requested weeks ago that Borell compile a report as soon as possible, to understand what Kosovo has done towards fulfilling the conditions to remove the imposed measures.

Most of the member countries have proposed that the measures be removed completely, while some states that they be removed gradually.

But, before making a decision, they also asked for Borrell's evaluation.

Radio Free Europe has learned from diplomatic sources that due to the developments surrounding the closure of the facilities of the Savings Bank of the Post of Serbia, it has been requested that these actions be taken into account in Borrell's report.

Stano said the same on May 28.

"The measures were decided as a result of the uncoordinated and unilateral actions of Kosovo, which led to the escalation of the situation. The measures were set in order to motivate the Kosovo authorities to take steps for expansion. Of course, everything that has a negative impact on the ground, and in the extension efforts, is being taken into account and is being included in the report", he said.

Both the United States and the European Union have said that the recent actions of the Kosovo authorities have been "unilateral and uncoordinated".

Based on the vocabulary used by the EU spokesperson - presenting the position of the European Union - the diplomats estimate that it will now be more difficult to propose the lifting of measures against Kosovo.

However, some member states are still awaiting the report.

The European Union imposed punitive measures against Kosovo a year ago, on the grounds that Kosovo did not do enough to avoid the escalation of tensions in May last year in the north of the country.

At that time, local Serbs protested against the entry of Albanian mayors into municipal facilities in Zveçan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok.

In the ongoing escalation of tensions, local Serbs have confronted members of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, leaving dozens of soldiers injured. /REL
