Athens-Skopje tensions, Silianovska: We are not violating the agreement, they

The President of North Macedonia, Gortnana Silianovska, has responded to Greece's accusations that she is violating the Prespa Agreement. Silianovska, newly in office, says that she has not violated the agreement, as she insists that Greece is coming out of its content.

Greece accuses North Macedonia of not implementing the Prespa Agreement, since on May 12, while taking the oath, the president called her country "Macedonia" and not "North Macedonia". The situation escalated after Greece's response was harsh, threatening to block its integration into the EU.

"I have respected the Prespa Agreement. I do not see that I violated the Prespa Agreement. Besides, the Prespa Agreement itself clearly states that documents and communications will use the name taken from the Prespa Agreement, so I don't see that as a violation here. I have neither torn the statutory guarantee, nor have I said that I will not respect the Constitution, nor have I said that I will denounce the Prespa Agreement. Another thing is that I criticized the Prespa Agreement, because of its approval process, because of its inconsistency with the Charter of the United Nations. But this is a legal fact, it is a reality and I will respect it" , said Gordana Silianovska.

Asked if her behavior could affect the European integration of the country, Gordana Silianovska said that this question should be asked by the Greek side. She said that while they are asking her to respect the agreement, to turn the finger away from herself, as according to her, the Greeks continue to call "Northern Macedonia" with the acronym "FYROM".

"I cannot answer, because maybe the Greek representatives can answer better. I sometimes hear some warnings and threats, but I say that it is true that in International Law the principle applies that Agreements must be respected, but I think that always, when we ask the other to do something, it is natural that the context of a "win" logic -win”, to ask ourselves what we have done. I think that anyone who has been to Greece has had the opportunity to see that the name they ask us to respect is not shown anywhere. Skopje continues to exist and in fact in many countries the acronym also exists (ss Macedonia-FYROM). Let's not talk about the memorandums", said Gordana Silianovska.
