Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said he is suspending his independent candidacy for the US presidency and will support Donald Trump.
He insisted he would not drop out and would keep his name on the ballot in states where it would not affect the race.
Kennedy, 70, a lifelong Democrat and scion of the powerful Kennedy dynasty, said: "In my heart I no longer believe that I have a realistic path to victory in the face of systemic censorship."
The announcement came after days of speculation about a possible Trump endorsement.
The decision effectively ends a campaign fueled by Kennedy's anti-vax views, colored by stories of dead bears and brain-eating worms. His poll numbers have fallen from a high in the double digits as funding and national coverage dried up.
At a press conference, Kennedy said the poll showed that staying on the ballot in battleground states was likely to hand the election to Democrats.
“If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without hurting or helping President Trump or Vice President Harris and red states, the same will apply. I encourage you to vote for me, and if enough of you vote for me and none of the major party candidates get 270 votes, that's quite possible," he said.
Kennedy suggested that a 269-269 electoral tie is possible with his strategy of staying on the ballot in some states.
He said he would withdraw his name from 10 states where his presence would be a disruption to Trump's effort.
Before working to elect Trump, Kennedy said he sought to have similar conversations with Ms. Harris.
