Romano Prodi: Albania has always had its place in the EU, Europe is too late

The former prime minister of Italy, Romano Prodi, said that Europe is late with the issue of enlargement, as he emphasizes that there is not even the slightest doubt that Albania has always belonged to the European Union.

During an interview in the Italian media, Prodi also spoke about the expansion of the Union and the way it is being acted today, where according to him it is vital to reflect an internal peace on this issue. He adds that the elections within the EU should also be taken into account.

The former head of the European Commission reflects on the Western Balkans, as if to bring a paradigm of what can be reflected today with the model that the EU is following.

"I have always believed that the former Yugoslavia and Albania were part of Europe," said Prodi, as he spoke about the enlargement.

"We are very late due to the delays in the negotiations caused by France with Albania and North Macedonia. It is a process that must go forward. There is no obstacle, as these countries do not have such a large economic weight to create concerns or problems. Of course, they should be accompanied by a change in the European institutions, but this should have been done with the enlargement of 2004 and it did not happen", he said.

Regarding the war in Ukraine and Gaza, the former prime minister emphasizes that it has become very important for the message of unity to be spread, aiming for a broad peace.

According to him, the time has come to show that the world can change and not only for the worse, but also for the better.

"Today, it is symbolically vital to show how the EU has created peace within itself. Then we go to the European elections", concluded Prodi.
