Anti-government protests continue in Israel, citizens demand Netanyahu's

Protesters gathered again in Israel on Sunday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the Israeli leader held a press conference and prepared for a medical intervention.

Netanyahu's office announced earlier that he was diagnosed with a hernia on Saturday evening and would undergo surgery under general anesthesia tonight. Yariv Levin, who serves as the country's deputy prime minister and justice minister, will serve as prime minister during the proceedings.

Netanyahu addressed the media before leaving for the operation Sunday evening local time. During the press conference, the prime minister said that Israeli forces have killed more than 200 people he described as militants in Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital.

The Israeli military has made similar claims about its ongoing raid on the medical facility. He also reiterated his commitment to capture the southern city of Rafah, saying it was necessary to defeat Hamas. Netanyahu vowed to return to work "very soon" after the operation.

As the prime minister spoke, another large protest was taking place outside the Knesset, Israel's parliament, calling for the release of hostages held in Gaza and Netanyahu's resignation. Sunday's protests mark the second day of mass anti-government protests this weekend. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Caesarea, Ra'anana and Herzliya on Saturday. At least 16 people were arrested, according to Israeli police.
