Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni traveled this afternoon to the Persian Gulf for a two-day mission to the region. Meloni first arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where she is expected to hold meetings with the main leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
This visit is considered the first by a Western leader to the Persian Gulf region since the beginning of the conflict in Iran, and comes at a very delicate moment for global energy security. The main purpose of the visit, according to Italian government sources, is mainly to strengthen Italy's national energy security.
The Gulf region remains crucial for oil and gas supplies, especially after recent concerns caused by tensions and conflicts in the area, which have also affected supplies from Qatar.
During the meetings, topics such as economic cooperation, regional security and opportunities for new agreements in the field of energy are expected to be discussed, with the aim of diversifying sources and protecting Italian interests in an unstable geopolitical context.
