President Donald Trump has said the US could "easily" reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz, marking a 180-degree turn after insisting that other countries are responsible for cleaning up the waterway.
The message raised questions about what exactly Trump believes is the US's responsibility in reopening the strait, which has been effectively closed due to the ongoing war.
"With a little more time, we could easily open the Strait of Hormuz, take the oil, and make a fortune. Would that be a 'reward' for the world??? ," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Friday morning.
He has previously said that countries that rely on oil passing through the strait, including Europe and Asia, should patrol the passage, not the United States.
While it was not clear whether his promise of needing "a little more time" to clear the strait indicated whether he anticipated the conflict to last longer than his last assessment of another two to three weeks.
