Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalized after a car accident in New Hampshire, where he suffered a fractured spine, his spokesman Michael Ragusa, who is also Giuliani's security chief, said.
According to Ragusa, Giuliani, 81, was hit from behind “at high speed” while he was traveling on a highway. He was immediately transported to a trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebra, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
“Despite the injuries, Giuliani is in good spirits and is recovering remarkably,” Ragusa wrote on social media. He added that the incident was not a “deliberate attack” and urged people to refrain from conspiracy theories.
Ragusa also indicated that shortly before the accident, Giuliani had been stopped by a woman involved in a domestic violence case and that he had immediately assisted, calling emergency services and staying at the scene until police arrived to ensure her safety.
Rudy Giuliani became known as “America’s mayor” after the September 11, 2001 attacks, earning national respect for his handling of the crisis in New York. But in recent years he has been deeply involved in Republican politics and, most notably, in former President Donald Trump’s legal team, spreading false claims of rigging the 2020 election.
Since then, Giuliani has faced numerous legal troubles. He has been indicted in Georgia and Arizona for his role in trying to overturn the election results. In another federal case, a judge ordered him to pay $148 million in damages to two Georgia election workers he publicly defamed by accusing them of ballot tampering. In January, Giuliani was found guilty of failing to comply with that court order and was held in contempt of court.
