Russia has attacked Ukraine overnight, launching a total of 67 long-range Shahed drones. In an announcement by the Air Defense Forces, 58 of them were shot down while defense units were put into action in 11 regions around Ukraine. Remnants of the drones were discovered near the parliament building in the capital Kyiv.
Russian missiles or drones rarely penetrate this deep into the capital, which is protected by a network of Soviet-era and Western defense systems. The area on the hill where the government seat is located in the center of the city is probably the most protected in Ukraine and also houses the offices of the president, the cabinet and the central bank.
Several loud explosions were heard in Kiev shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, as residents woke up in terror. As Moscow has stepped up attacks against Ukraine, Zelensky has repeated calls for allies to allow them to use long-range missiles against Russian territory.
But US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said after a meeting with other defense ministers and Zelensky at Germany's Ramstein air base that the use of long-range missiles would not change the trajectory of the war.
"We have always said that something like this would not be decisive in the war. We have had this discussion for tanks, or for other capacities every time, and we emphasize that it would not be enough just one thing, but a combination of capabilities, and the way they will be integrated to achieve the objectives , "said Lloyd Austin.
After the stop in Germany, Zelensky visited Italy, where he received the guarantee from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that the country's support for Kiev is unwavering.
