Russia aims to recruit 400,000 new soldiers this year to bolster its forces which have suffered heavy losses in the war in Ukraine, Britain's Ministry of Defense said in an updated intelligence report.
Russian troops in Ukraine consist of contract soldiers and some reservists, who have been mobilized in late 2022, according to British intelligence.
Conscript soldiers, who are not legally involved in the war, are pressured to register as contract soldiers so that they can be sent to the front line.
"About 150,000 soldiers between the ages of 18 and 30 are scheduled to be recruited this spring. They will serve for 12 months in all types of armed forces of Russia," British intelligence said.
On April 3, Kremlin spokesman Dmytry Peskov denied rumors of additional mobilizations being planned in Russia.
Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
According to several documents leaked by American intelligence in December of last year, 315,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded in Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
Russia is also believed to have lost thousands of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
American experts estimated in August of last year that 75,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, out of 200,000 of the initial fighting force. Ukraine is completely dependent on arms supplies from the US and other Western allies to continue the war against Russia./ REL
