Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he does not need "primitive" ideas from former President Donald Trump on ways to resolve the war with Russia, but real ideas.
"I need very strong arguments. I don't need a fantastic idea, I need a real idea, because people's lives are at stake," Zelenskyy told Politico.
The president said he was open to hearing Trump's proposals for war, while adding that "if the deal is that we just give up our territories, then it's a very primitive idea."
Zelenskyy warned that Russian influence had penetrated the US political system and rejected the idea, backed by allies of Donald Trump, that Ukraine could end the war quickly only by making massive territorial concessions.
Among other things, he said he had privately asked Trump through intermediaries to travel to Ukraine and that Trump had expressed interest but had not yet committed to a trip. Zelenskyy said he was open to hearing Trump's proposals for war, while making it clear he was very skeptical.
Any deal that gives land to Russian President Vladimir Putin in exchange for an end to hostilities, Zelenskyy said, would simply pave the way for more Russian wars of aggression in the future. Trump has been a persistent skeptic of the war effort and a critic of Zelenskyy, and he recently said he would encourage Russia to act with impunity against members of the NATO alliance that do not spend large sums of money on defense. President Joe Biden has attacked Trump on the campaign trail as a threat to world stability and a harborer of Putin and other foreign dictators.
