For Putin, 71 years old, the election is a formality: with the support of the state, state media and no political opponents, he is certain of victory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will run for another presidential term as an independent candidate with strong support, not tied to a party, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday, citing his supporters.

A group of 700 politicians and figures from the world of sports and culture met on Saturday in Moscow and unanimously approved Putin's nomination as an independent candidate, Russian news agencies said.

Putin, who has been in power as president and prime minister for more than two decades, has announced he will run for another six-year term in March next year, in an election he is widely expected to win.

“Putin will not run as a candidate for the ruling party "United Russia" (UR) although he has her full support, but as an independent candidate. More than 3.5 million party members and supporters will take an active part in the election campaign", said Andrei Turchak, a senior official of the UR party.

Sergei Mironov, a senior politician from the Right Russia party that supports Putin, also said that Putin will run as an independent and that signatures will be collected in his support.

For Putin, 71 years old, the election is a formality: with the support of the state, state media and no political opponents, he is certain of victory.

Putin's supporters say he has restored order, national pride and some of the influence Russia lost during the chaos of the Soviet collapse, and that his war in Ukraine, something Putin calls a "special military operation," is justified.

There are no longer any opponents of Putin in Russia, as they have been sentenced to dozens of years in prison or forced to flee the country, after being accused of extremism and treason.
