Russia is increasing the production of weapons to cope with the war in Ukraine, but thereby threatening the Baltic states, as well as Georgia and Moldova, Pistorius was quoted as saying during an interview with the newspaper Welt am Sonntag. According to him, the United States will eventually reduce its military commitment in Europe, as it is more interested in the Indo-Pacific.
"We Europeans must commit more, to guarantee the security of our continent", said Pistorius, although he admitted that the region will need time to increase the production of weapons. "It will take us 5-8 years to reach the goal, as far as the armed forces, industry and society are concerned," he said.
Europe is clear that it will have to compensate the American aid to Ukraine, if Washington does not reach compliance for the new funds, the German minister added. According to him, the new power in Poland, more friendly to Europe, will enable the countries of the Weimar Triangle, Berlin, Paris and Warsaw, to increase their military cooperation.
Pistorius has said that it is not foreseen that the German army will repeat the missions like those it had in Afghanistan or Mali. The German mission in Afghanistan was the first for this country since the end of the Second World War./ REL
