Sarkozy went to prison, Macron: We must separate emotions from the functioning

Discussing the issue of temporary detention, that is, before a case is finally decided, "is legitimate and legal in a democratic regime, but it must be carried out regardless of specific cases," said French President Emmanuel Macron, when asked from Ljubljana, Slovenia, to comment on the imprisonment in a Paris prison of the country's former president, Nicolas Sarkozy, while his appeal is pending.

Emmanuel Macron emphasized that a president of the French Republic has no right to comment on judicial decisions, noting, however, that he is at the same time the guarantor of the proper functioning of the country's institutions.

Therefore, Macron continued, "I will not make any comments," noting, however, that it is normal for the image of the imprisonment of a former president of the Republic to provoke all kinds of comments and observations.

"I believe we must distinguish between emotions, the respect that every person is entitled to, and the proper functioning of Justice," the French President said.
