German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel shortly before the start of Ramadan.
In a video speech, the German leader said the vast majority of Palestinians and Israelis wanted peace and a ceasefire would be a step towards that.
" This would ideally be during Ramadan. Such a ceasefire should ensure that the Israeli hostages are finally released and that more humanitarian aid finally reaches Gaza. The American president, myself and many others – we are committed to this with all our might ", said Scholz via a post on "X".
Attempts by Egypt and the US to advance an agreement between the parties have failed. Both Hamas and Israel blame each other for failing to reach a ceasefire.
