German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Europe should have closer military cooperation, adding that he also supports France's nuclear deterrent, as President Emmanuel Macron has suggested, to respond to what Scholz called "imperialism brutal" of Russia.
" I welcome the fact that the French president has emphasized the European dimension for France's nuclear strike forces ," Scholz wrote in an article published in The Economist on May 23.
" In addition to nuclear deterrence, we also want to have strong conventional forces, air and missile defense as well as cyber, space capabilities with a precision strike ," said Scholz.
" Europeans can and will contribute more to transatlantic burden sharing [within NATO] ," he added.
Scholz also said that the European Union will not have its own nuclear weapons.
" There is no intention to question France's nuclear deterrence ," the German chancellor said.
Last month, Macron said France's nuclear weapons should be part of the European defense debate.
Before that, Macron called for stronger and more integrated European defense, while he presented his vision of a stronger European Union on the European stage, saying that "Europe can die".
