The UN General Assembly has started the debate on a resolution proposal that would declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide.
This resolution has been strongly opposed by Serbia. The Serbian President, Aleksandër Vucic, speaking in the Assembly, said that he is in that room to vote against this resolution. According to him, this resolution is politicized and if it is approved, it will open what he described as "Pandora's Box".
Vucic further emphasized that the resolution will not unite anyone in Bosnia but will create more divisions in the region.
" Speaking against Germany and against the resolution is not easy. Before the session began, I bow before the victims of the conflict in Bosnia, who have been Serbs and Bosniaks. I am in this room to vote against the resolution, this resolution is extremely politicized. Why didn't these people start talking about the genocide their countries have committed, they started talking about the holocaust, which has been recognized by the United Nations. All other genocides have been recognized and accepted, including the genocide against the Serbs in the First World War. Will this resolution unite anyone in Bosnia, will there be divisions in the region? This will create separation. The resolution is a blow to Serbia. This resolution will open Pandora's box" , he emphasized.
He further added that this whole resolution will do nothing but open old wounds because that is what they are interested in politically. Vucic further called on the member states to vote against this resolution.
" Why are you adapting these amendments, just to hide the truth? You are opening wounds again because someone needs it politically. I went to Srebrenica by myself to lay flowers and I was lynched. This is something that will open old wounds that will create a political chaos not only in the region but also in the hall. I want to give them a gift, we belong to a proud nation that has been able to defend itself. Today we are not only defending ourselves, but also the world and the principles, I call on the member states to vote against this resolution ", said Vucic, among other things.
