Scholz set a "border" for the Balkan countries: No one will join the
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajic during today's meeting in Berlin

None of the many countries aiming for EU membership will join for geopolitical reasons alone.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a meeting with the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milojko Spajic, made it clear to all the Balkan countries that none of the countries aiming for EU membership will become part of the Union for geopolitical reasons!

This is a statement that extinguishes the hopes of the countries of the Western Balkans, such as Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro, to join the EU due to the tense situation in which Europe and the world are.

All the Balkan countries expected that the war in Ukraine and the fear of Russian influence in the Balkans would cause the EU to speed up the procedures to allow their membership. But Scholz made it clear, during the reception of the Montenegrin president in Berlin, that membership depends only on reforms.

He also emphasized that Germany will give its support to all countries that intend to join and make the necessary efforts.

" None of the many countries aiming for EU membership will join only for geopolitical reasons. But can Montenegro join after four years? It is also about the achievements of each country (merit-based), i.e. how much it has fulfilled the prerequisites for the rule of law, democracy, market economy and social coexistence. The prerequisite is the fulfillment of the European acquis. But I am impressed with the ambition and speed. And I think it's a realistic ambition. We will offer all our support for this" , declared Scholz.

Then in a post on the "X" platform after the meeting with Spajic, Scholz wrote that Montenegro is on the right track and that it will have the support of Germany to join the EU.

" No other country in the Balkans is currently more determined to progress towards creating the conditions to join the EU. During his visit to Berlin, I assured Prime Minister Spajic of our support in this way ", wrote Scholz.

Despite the numerous statements by senior EU officials, such as Von der Leyen and Charles Michel, that the membership of the Balkans should be accelerated, Scholz set the "limit to you", making it clear that the only way is to achieve reforms. / Pamphlet
